Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement

Movement for Wellness

Feldenkrais® group classes are known as Awareness Through Movement® lessons. Similar to Tai Chi or gentle yoga, Awareness Through Movement classes use slow, mindful movements to achieve powerful effects in terms of strength, flexibility, and holistic integration of body and mind. Unique to the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education is that these lessons tie directly into functional movements of daily life, such as walking efficiently, safely lifting objects, and improving one’s posture in sitting or standing.

Awareness Through Movement

You can expect a class to last somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes. You might walk, stand, or sit in a chair, although usually, you will lie on the floor in a variety of comfortable positions: either on your back, front, or side. The teacher guides students through a sequence of movements, encouraging them to move with gentle attention within a comfortable range. You may become aware of unexpected and interesting connections within and between the movements. As you attend to the improving quality of movement, unnecessary muscular tensions throughout the body can reorganize and release. Students are often amazed at the quick and clear changes that occur through the neuromuscular repatterning that happens in an Awareness Through Movement lesson!

There are active, playful and fun lessons.

Like this lesson called the “Judo Roll”, a series of 8 one hour lessons to find the ability to completely flip over. Through small, mindful and easy lessons, you can achieve something you never thought you could do before. And your back will thank you for it!

There are stimulating lessons

Like this lesson, “Rolling the head in the hands,” which challenges you to do everything to find comfort and move yourself in the easiest way. Through deep listening to yourself, you will find so much freedom in your spine.

There are meditative lessons

Like this lessob, “Sphinx,” where you gently explore the movement of the chest, neck and head; following an imaginary ant crawling up the wall slowly. The feeling afterwards is calm, parasympathetic joy – with improved vision and a free neck.

"I loved how Andréa offered us different movement exercises that gave me a lot of insight on how I move through the world; even if we were on zoom, I could feel their presence and kindness. They were very generous in their teaching and support during and after classes. "

"After class, i remember finding everything so colourful and beautiful. Like i was seeing everything for the first time!"

Émilie Savoie From live series: Unrestricted Breathing

"I love this method! Andréa is an excellent teacher. Each class takes me deeper into the subtle power of awareness, softness and gentle movements. I live with chronic pain and have a brain injury, and the more I practice, the more I feel it helping transform and re-wire my neural pathways!"
